Wodonga Raiders' Raven Jolliffe suffered a jaw injury in an accidental collision in the first quarter against Wangaratta Rovers.

Wodonga Raiders post 25-point victory over struggling Hawks, but coach happy with the ugly win

Wodonga Raiders’ coach Daryn Cresswell has surprisingly rated his team’s scrappy 25-point win over battling Wangaratta Rovers.

To an outsider, the 9.14 (68) to 6.7 (43) win appeared to waste an ideal opportunity to boost percentage in that crucial fight for the top five.

“It was hard to really move the footy, it was wet and (the ground was) shifty under foot, so I don’t think conditions really suited us and they’ve got some good strong players around the ball,” he said.

“I was pretty happy to come away with the four points in tough conditions.

“It wasn’t an outside game so, for a young group, it gets us ready for a really strong outfit in ‘Yarra’.”

Raiders’ away clash against Yarrawonga could prove crucial in the hunt for the remaining top three berth.

Injuries might also play a role with Ethan Boxall (ankle) lasting only two minutes, while Raven Jolliffe (jaw) and Brett Lefoe (hamstring) were also casualties of the tough match.
